The US Bureau for Labor and Statistics projects that employment in computer and information technology occupations will grow 11% in the next ten years, much faster than the average for all other occupations. Workers with experience in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, data collection and storage, and information security will be in high demand. And, with a median annual wage of $91,250 (almost $50,000 above the median annual wage for all other occupations), a career in computer science and technology offers a promising economic future for prospective students.

Each year, as part of its Amazon Future Engineer program, Amazon awards 100 high school seniors with a $40,000 college scholarship to study computer science and a guaranteed paid summer internship at Amazon after their first year of study. The financial support and hands-on-experience set students on a path to succeed in engineering jobs at Amazon or elsewhere. So, what skills have enabled their success? Which experiences best prepared them for real careers in the tech sector? What advice do they have for teachers working to equip the next generation? Amazon Future Engineer Intern 2021

Chloe Nguyen is an Amazon Future Engineer Scholar from Houston, Texas. She is a rising sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania in the Huntsman Program, studying International Business and Computer Science. This summer, she worked on the Prime Video Android Team and outside of her internship, she loves traveling, hiking, and playing guitar.

Brittney is a third-year student at the Georgia Institute of Technology majoring in Computer Science. She became an Amazon Future Engineer Scholar in 2019, and since has held two internships with Amazon on the Home Innovation Team. At school, Brittney has worked as an undergraduate teaching assistant for a Java course and is very active in the Ballroom Dance Club.

Amazon Future Engineer Intern 2021 

Ebi Indiamaowei is an AFE intern who worked in person this summer. He is a sophomore at Carnegie Mellon University and hails from Palatine in the Chicago land area. He firmly believes 'faking it till you make it' is a solid strategy for life and owes all his success to his mom and dumb luck.

Math and Computer Science Teacher, Canyon Ridge High School

David J Rodriguez is a Integrated Math I/II and Introduction to Computer Science Teacher, teaching Python, at Canyon Ridge High School in Hesperia Unified School District in California. Now in his 16th year of teaching, David is a technology pioneer and trainer/coach of Smart Board technologies and Esports. In 2020, David was awarded Amazon Future Engineer Teacher of the Year for collaboratively teaching Computer Science to struggling youth in an alternative learning environment.

Devin Johnson leads the US Amazon Future Engineer Program. Prior to this, he spent time working in various functions of the HR space including: Talent Acquisition, Talent Management, and Employee Engagement. He holds a degree in business from Western Illinois University, a Masters in Education from University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and currently pursuing his Masters of Business Administration at Washington State University.

Carl Hooker is an educational consultant and speaker from Austin, TX. He is a former teacher and administrator and has written 6 books on mobile learning as well as being a National Faculty Member for Future Ready Schools. He hosts two podcasts and has launched an online course called The Remote Learning Coach for schools and districts looking for assistance when it comes to remote and hybrid learning.
